To say it was a good night for John Robbins would be putting it mildly as the Frankton driver recorded two feature wins at Anderson Speedway.
Robbins took the lead on the first lap of the Tri-States Legends feature when the other three cars in the front two rows tangled in turn one.
It all started when it appeared Evan Finley locked up the brakes going into the corner and made hard contact with the outside retaining wall. That collected Marty Griffin and Zach Miller.
Somehow Robbins was able to miss the carnage and emerged in the lead. His march to the win was slowed twice by caution flags.
The first when Joey Greening spun on the back straight with a little assistance from Eric Black on the ninth circuit.
From there the driver on the move was Cody Anderson who restarted third and got around Gered Miller in turn one on the restart. Greening brought out the caution flag again with a spin on lap 23.
Robbins was able to maintain the lead holding off Anderson by a half-second, followed by Miller, Black and Adam Sturgill.
Zach Miller recorded the first heat race win by leading all ten laps, but behind him Finley and Black battled for the second spot.
Finley came home second followed by Black, Sturgill and Griffin Brown.
Anderson won the second heat race but it wasn’t decided until the final lap.
Anderson and Josh Dietz along with Robbins were fighting for position with Dietz and Anderson playing bumper tag on the final two laps.
On the last lap Dietz locked bumpers with Anderson, sending him into the turn one retaining wall and out of the night’s racing action.
Robbins finished second followed by Gered Miller, Greening and Griffith.
In the Thunder Roadsters, Robbins didn’t take the lead until lap 11 with an inside pass of James Edsall III.
At times Edsall, the early leader, Robbins and Darrell Brown were racing three wide for the point. That all changed on lap nine when Brown was nudged by another car and made hard contact with the turn one wall.
Robbins led the final 14 laps with Doug Dugger closing the gap on every lap. Chris Weddel finished third with Edsall and Griffith rounding out the top five.
“Winning never gets old,” Robbins said in the Tim Thompson Nationwide Insurance Winner’s Circle following his Roadsters win. “We changed tires after the heat race and it made a difference. Right now everyone is on a level playing field.”
