Veteran Legends car driver John Robbins started the 2023 campaign with a victory at Anderson Speedway on Saturday night. Robbins set fast time during qualifications slightly ahead of Xavier King and Sam Johnson. The three fastest qualifiers would contend for the top spot throughout the 30 lap feature.
Tony Paquette took the lead at the start chased by King and Robbins. When both King and Paquette pushed up the track in turn three, Robbins drove to the inside to take the top spot. The best racing on the track was between King and Johnson with Johnson finally making the pass for the second spot on lap 27. Robbins would win by less than a second over Johnson with King, Johnny Weaver and Paquette rounding out the top five.
“We were close on times,” Robbins said of qualifying, in the Peterman Brothers Victory Lane. “I was shooting for a track record.” Of the pass for the lead, Robbins said the bottom lane opened up and allowed him to take control of the race. “It opened up and I went for it,” he said.
