ANDERSON – The second round of spring championships at Anderson Speedway produced four different winners.
It was a tough night for drivers that took leads in two of the four divisions Saturday on Meldon HVAC Mother’s Day Classic.
The best race of the night was in the Beaver Contracting Legends feature which saw four lead changes over the final seven circuits.
Xavier King led the first 17 laps chased by fast qualifier Dalton Conner and track champion John Robbins.
Conner took the lead on lap 18 by picking the best way around lapped traffic coming off the fourth corner with Robbins passing King a lap later.
Robbins used lapped traffic on the back straight to take the lead from Conner, but on the final lap Conner was able to retake the lead entering turn one for the victory.
Robbins, King, Alex Hess and Caleb Burge rounded out the top five.
The victory for Conner took some of the sting out of losing the USA Tires Modified race with two laps remaining.
“I didn’t want to lose this one, after losing the entire one,” Conner said in the Hoosier Lottery Victory Lane after his Legends win.
“I needed that one,” he said. “It’s always fun racing with John (Robbins) and Xavier (King). The racing was a little dicey there in the corners.”
Anderson’s Josh Poore claimed the Modified feature win for his second of the year when the engine in Conner’s car expired.
Conner set fast time and led the first 38 laps before coming to a halt in turn two which gave Poore the lead over Nathan Greene.
Poore stayed in front for the final two laps with Greene, RJ Norton III, Josh Ebbert Jr. and Lucas Ball rounding out the top five.
“I was able to match lap times, but he had a pretty good lead,” Poore said. “I’ve lost some that way, won some that way. I’ll take it tonight.”
Andrew Teepe inherited the lead in the Vore’s Welding & Steel Street Stock feature when early leader James Kirby II experienced an engine failure on lap 19.
Andrew Cook set a new track record in the division during qualifying leading the first lap before Kirby took control.
The race went caution free with Teepe getting the victory followed by Poore, Cook, Jacob McElfresh and Joe Muldoon.
Caleb Southerland kept his perfect season going in the Front Wheel Drive division with his second win of the season.
Gauge Hulett wins his first career Front Wheel Drive race after Caleb Southerland and Austin Pursley were disqualified.
