Anderson
Speedway’s 2004 racing season comes to a close on Sunday, October 17, with a
$5,000 to win Street Stock Enduro 250 and a special appearance of the Chappy’s
Rent to Own Front Wheel Drives.
Two-time and defending Terry’s RV Sales & Service Street Stock Champion Rich
Boyer is one of the favorites to score the victory this weekend. The Anderson
resident collected eight feature victories in 2004 and is coming off a dominant
win in the 7th Annual Weidner Chevrolet Stock Car Festival.
New
Castle’s Jason Atkinson was the Rookie of the Year and runner-up in the point
standings and will be another driver to watch this weekend. Atkinson recorded
two feature victories at Anderson this season and also produced 14 top 10s. His
D & D Racing teammates of Danny Acrey and Darwin Blankenship will also be
competing in the 250-lap event. All three D & D Racing cars scored feature
victories this year at the quarter-mile oval.
Veteran racer and 2000 Ed Martin Auto Group Super Truck champion Joe Beaver
ended the 2004 season on a roll, driving the Terry Burton owned machine to three
Street Stock feature victories.
Other former division champions entered for the event include two-time Super
Truck titlist Tim Neal, 2004 Insight ThunderCar driver champion Josh Poore, 1981
Street Stock champion Jim Jordan, 2000 Street Stock titlist Brad Huffman and
1998 Figure 8 champion Ronnie Phipps.
Greenfield’s
Phil Jenkins will be looking to win his second Enduro event of the season. In
July, he captured the victory in the Insight ThunderCar 200-lap race. Other
drivers that will be battling for the top prize include Rod Phipps, who placed
fifth in the 2004 Street Stock standings and Johnny Magee, the 2003 winner of
the Halloween 200 at Salem Speedway.
Several drivers will make a first appearance at Anderson Speedway for the $5,000
to win Street Stock Enduro, but carry some impressive accomplishments at other
short tracks. Allan Williams was the Sportsdrome Speedway Extreme Oval Champion
in 2003 and 2004, Artie "Be" Ware earned the 2003 Sportsdrome Extreme Figure 8
Champion. Beau Mitchell won the July 4th Firecracker 200 at Salem Speedway.
One
of the most popular divisions at Anderson Speedway, the Chappy’s Rent to Own
Front Wheel Drives will also be featured on Sunday afternoon. On October 2, the
division produced a record car count, with 56 drivers competing on the
quarter-mile oval.
Some of top drivers in the Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drives include 2004
champion Chris Tepee, who produced an impressive 21 top-10 finishes this year.
Richmond’s Chris Jennings finished second in the final standings with Sam
Folsom, Kim McKinney and Randy Owen rounding out the top five.
On Sunday, spectator gates open at 11 a.m. with qualifying taking center stage
at 12:30 p.m. The racing program begins at 2. Adult tickets are $10 with
children ages 6-12 priced at $4. Kids five and under are admitted free.
