One of the greatest short track traditions in American stock car racing, the
38th Anderson 400 presented by Corteco, will take place at Anderson Speedway on
Saturday, July 17. Annually, the most high profile event of the Sunoco Super
Series Late Model season, it offers the richest purse and largest crowds of its
Midwestern slate.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Indiana-based Sunoco Super Series is
sanctioning the historic event. Greenfield's Kenny Tweedy won the inaugural
event with the Sunoco Super Series in 2000, fending off challenges from two of
greatest stock car drivers, Canadian Hall of Fame member Junior Hanley and
Badger standout Scott Hansen.
Daleville's Bull Baker took the checkered flag in 2001 with Chet Fillip and
Bobby Parsley winning the last two events. Fillip became the first driver in
history to win the Pay Less / Delco Remy Little 500 and the Anderson 400.
Kentucky's Parsley earned the prestigious victory last July, holding off a
furious challenge from Hanley.
The Anderson 400 presented by Corteco has an impressive history with many of the
nations top drivers competing in the legendary event in the previous 37 years.
Tiny Lund of South Carolina won the 1974 race with Bobby Allison, Darrell
Waltrip and Rusty Wallace all making at least one appearance in the event.
The winner's list is a who's who of short track racing including Dave Watson,
Mark Martin, Bob Senneker, Alan Kulwicki, Dick Trickle, Mike Eddy, Bryan
Reffner, Kevin Cywinski and Gary St. Amant. Added with the recent Sunoco Super
Series winners, the list is one of the most renowned in stock car racing.
Activities for the 38th Anderson 400 presented by Corteco begin on Friday, July
16, with Corteco Pole Qualifying set for 8 p.m. The MAX/WLBC Friday Night Summer
Series will be featured with the McCrocklin Ford & Mobility Legends, Insight
ThunderCars on the Oval and Figure 8 and Chappy's Rent to Own Front Wheel
Drives.
On Saturday, July 17, a warm-up session is set for 5 p.m. with an on-track
autograph session scheduled for 6. The Anderson 400 presented by Corteco goes
green at 8. General admission tickets for the event are $18 in advance and $20
on race day.
