(April
1, 2014) -
Racing action returns to Anderson Speedway
on Saturday night with a huge early season
event. The Winged Outlaw Figure 8 Series
(WOFS) will compete in its inaugural event
with a huge car count expected featuring a
stellar field for the 50-lap event.
Additionally the Front Wheel Drive Oval and
Figure 8 divisions along with the Super
Karts will be in action at the high-banked
quarter-mile oval.
The inaugural WOFS event is expected to draw
some of the biggest names the sport has to
offer. The most competitive field of Outlaw
Figure 8 cars is expected in the history of
the speedway. Outlaw Figure 8 racing at
Anderson Speedway dates back to 1980.
Drivers that have already committed as of
Monday night include: Gary Bedell, Ben Tunny,
Danny Stanley Jr., Eddie Van Meter, Mike
Hadley Jr., Jacob Garriguss, Jeff
Shackleford, Larry Swinford, Jeremy
Vanderhoof, Doug Greig, RJ Norton Jr. RJ
Norton III, Curtis McMurtrey, Shawn Cullen,
Bruce McFall, Robbie Loving, Marvin Owens,
Chris Green, Dennis Whisman, and Michael
Phipps among others. This arguably could be
the best crop of Outlaw Figure 8 drivers
assembled at Anderson Speedway in the same
night ever.
The WOFS claims to have the “Fastest Figure
8 Cars in the World”. The series is the only
place in the Midwest fans will get the
opportunity to see the big wings that these
unlimited machines sport. Most tracks and
series in the area have restrictions on the
height and length of the wings. Saturday
nights racing program will be capped off
with a 50-lap feature event.
RJ Norton Jr. makes his return to Anderson
Speedway in an Outlaw Figure 8 car for the
first time in a few years. Norton is the
winningest driver in the history of Outlaw
Figure 8 racing at Anderson Speedway. Norton
presently has 11 career wins dating back to
1989. Norton is one of the early favorites
heading into Saturday night’s event.
The WOFS is a new traveling Outlaw Figure 8
series that was formed in late 2013 by
Anderson residents Steve Little and David
Sink. Saturday’s event will be the first
points paying event for the upstart series.
The Front Wheel Drives Oval division will
compete for the first time in 2014. Last
year, Jerry Dane led the division with six
feature wins. Other multiple event winners
included Elliott McKinney and Nick Warner
with three a piece along with two for Chris
Jennings and Paul Phipps.
Kevin Henson and Nick Warner dominated the
Front Wheel Drives Figure 8’s in 2013 with
Henson collecting seven wins and Warner
visiting the winner’s circle on five
occasions. Other feature winner’s included
Donnie Ellis Jr., Elliott McKinney and Mike
Alley.
The Super Karts will make their first
appearance this season. Last season, feature
winners included David Reynolds, Brad Kares,
Angie Goodin and Nathan Bertino.
On Saturday, April 5, spectator gates open
at 3 p.m. with the racing beginning at 6.
Admission is $12 for adults and $4 for kids
ages 6-12. Children five and under get in
free.
