Allman Holds off Lundy in WMDH ThunderCar Action
(August
29, 2011) – It has been some time since Rob Allman scored a feature
win in WMDH Thunder Car action, but that all changed on Saturday.
Allman made a nifty move at the start of the feature to climb from the
second row to the point, a position he wouldn’t surrender the rest of the
way.
The race’s only caution flag waved on the second circuit when Rob Noel and
Ronald Adams bumped in turn one with both cars spinning to a stop.
On the double-file restart Hannah Lundy got inside of Lonny Burton for
second entering turn two and set her sights on Allman, who was pulling away
from the field.
Lundy closed on Allman in the late stages of the race but came up
.265-seconds short. It was Allman’s second win of the season. Burton
finished third followed by Ryan Buckner and Noel.
In the first of two heat races, veteran Herb Rose jumped into the lead
followed by Allman. The front two drivers were pulling away from the field
with Burton and Lundy getting inside of Noel for the third and fourth spots
on lap six entering turn three.
A lap later, Rose was black-flagged for turning laps faster than his
qualifying time. That gave the victory to Allman following by Burton, Lundy,
Noel and Buckner.
Sammy Hawkins led from start to finish in the second heat race to record his
first ever win at Anderson Speedway. But Hawkins had to hold off a rapidly
closing Adams, who finished .308-seconds behind.
Adams was fifth after the first lap and moved to third after two circuits
with an outside pass of Jared Keller and Jimmy Hawkins in turn three. He
then passed Todd Yarberry for second with three laps remaining, but couldn’t
catch Hawkins.
Hawkins was also smiles in accepting his first trophy. Adams finished second
followed by Yarberry, Keller and Jimmy Hawkins.
During Herald Bulletin qualifying, Lundy established a new track record with
a lap of 14.680 seconds to shatter the mark set by Ronnie Rose of
14.728-second set on Aug. 22, 2009.
