A repeat winner in the Ed Martin
SuperTruck 150 and a wild Boss Hogg Catering & Jerky Figure 8 feature
highlighted The Star Press Saturday Night Series at Anderson Speedway on August
12. Fans were treated to a comfortable night with cool temperatures and low
humidity on the World’s Fastest Quarter Mile Oval.
Noblesville’s Joe Beaver scored his second-straight win in the Ed Martin
SuperTruck 150. Beaver passed top qualifier Bob Lemen of Indianapolis on the
27th lap and never relinquished the lead as he took the inside line through
turns three and four and down the front stretch to gain the advantage. Anderson
drivers Ronnie Rose and Josh Poore passed Lemen on laps 49 and 50, respectively,
to take over the second and third spots. The top five at the half-way point
included Beaver, Rose, Poore, Lemen and Anderson’s Brandon Phillips.
The second half of the race belonged to Beaver, while a hot battle shaped up
between Rose and Poore for second. The two tangled on the 129th lap in the first
turn, with Poore taking over second and Rose relegated to the infield with a
flat tire. Rose lost several laps as a result and fell out of contention.
Meanwhile Poore tried to mount a late-race challenge for the win, but by that
point Beaver had too much of an advantage.
At the end the top five included Beaver, Poore, Lemen, New Castle’s Mark Jones
and Phillips. Muncie’s Derrick Layne finished sixth also on the lead lap. Lemen
took the pole with a qualifying time of 13.768 seconds. The race was slowed by
five caution periods.
The Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Oval and Figure 8 divisions made a
special Saturday night appearance. Anderson’s Devin Mitchell took the Oval
feature. Mitchell took the lead from fellow Anderson driver Jerry Baker on the
10th of 15 laps when Baker slid high in turn 4.
Mt. Summit’s Keith Morris took over the second spot the following lap with a
similar pass. Mitchell and Morris then separated from the pack with Mitchell
scoring a nose-to-tail win. Eric Shell finished third, followed by Baker and
Alexandria’s Kevin Harmon in the top five.
Mark Funderburk scored the win in the first Front Wheel Drive Oval heat, while
Jack Leisure was victorious in the second heat. Morris paced qualifying with a
time of 16.361 seconds.
Travis Burge captured the win in the Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive
Figure 8’s feature. Burge took the lead form the start and fended off challenges
from Indianapolis’s Derick Young and Morris. At the finish Burge was followed by
Morris and Anderson drivers David Baker, Randy Owen and Nick Warner. Young led
qualifying with a time of 20.993 seconds.
Wild and wooly may be the best way to describe the Boss Hogg Catering & Jerky
Figure 8’s feature. Elliott McKinney and Josh Tharp tangled two times on three
attempted starts of the 20-lap race. The final incident came after the first lap
had been completed, forcing both McKinney and Tharp to the rear of the pack.
Anderson’s Rob Allman avoided the problems and took advantage as he scored a
decisive win, his second in three weeks. Noblesville’s Shawn Cullen finished a
distant second, followed by Anderson drivers Ranny Hinton and Michael Phipps and
Noblesville’s Larry Swinford.
The first Figure 8 heat race went to Hinton, while Noblesville’s Jeff Swinford
took the win in the second heat. McKinney led qualifying with a time of 19.253
seconds and drew a straight-up start for the feature.
Anderson Speedway returns to racing action on Friday, August 18 with the
