The Titan Auto Insurance Independence
Celebration concluded on Monday, July 4, with The Right Movers Figure 8 Madness.
Featured events included the 1 Hour Figure 8 Enduro showcasing the Boss Hogg
Catering & Jerky Figure 8’s and Insight ThunderCar Figure 8’s, School Bus Figure
8’s and Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure 8’s.
Former Figure 8 Champion Mike Riddle Jr. scored the checkered flag in the 1 Hour
Figure 8 Enduro. At the start of the event, Ronnie Rose drove into first
position, holding off several early race challenges from Riddle. On the 57th
circuit, Rose dropped out of action with mechanical problems, handing the first
position to Riddle. At the 30-minute mark, a short break allowed teams to make
adjustments on the cars.
At halfway, Riddle showed the way over Shawn Cullen with Curtis Chapman in third
position. The top three cars completed all 66 laps during the first half of the
event. Riddle dominated the second half of the event with Cullen and Chapman
battling for second position. Chapman then lost five laps after he suffered a
flat tire, propelling Cullen to a solid second place.
At the finish, Riddle scored a sizeable victory over Cullen. Ronnie Phipps
earned third-place honors with Chapman and Ranny Hinton completing the top five.
Ronnie Rose posted the fastest time in qualifications with a lap of 20.412
seconds.
In the first season appearance of the School Bus Figure 8’s, Tim Nickerson
recorded his second consecutive victory in an entertaining 15-lap event. Ten
School Buses took the green flag that provided a lot of cross-over action,
three-wide racing and several close calls for Nickerson. At the finish,
Nickerson held off Bobby Greenwood to earn the victory. The remainder of the top
five included Ranny Hinton, Basil Stanley and Kim McKinney.
The Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure 8 main event featured the
largest starting field of the season and one of best shows of 2005. Chris Teepe
earned the victory in a race that showcased great racing throughout the 15-lap
race. At the start, point’s leader Nick Warner grabbed the point, but had Teepe
glued to his bumper for much of the race.
On the ninth circuit, Warner suffered a flat tire, propelling Teepe to the top
of the leaderboard. At the checkers, Teepe held on for his third feature win of
the season. Travis Burge grabbed runner-up honors with Randy Owen, Keith Morris
and Devin Mitchell rounding out the top five.
