Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind. emerged from a late-race duel with Dave Steele
to claim a record fifth consecutive victory in the 57th Pay Less / Remy
International Little 500 USAC Special Event Sprint Car race Saturday night at
the Anderson Speedway.
Steele, who led 141 laps of the 500-lap race on the quarter-mile paved oval,
blew an engine while leading on lap 461, relinquishing the lead to Gordon, who
led the final 39 laps in his Pay Less/Print Express Competition Welding/Gaerte.
Gordon's prize money topped $31,000 as he led 181 total laps and finished five
laps ahead of race runner-up Tim Cox of Park City, Ill. Tim Barber of San
Francisco, Calif. took third. Dorman Snyder and Jason McCord rounded out the
"top-five" at the finish.
Defending USAC Western Sprint Car Champ Tony Hunt led 29 laps and was running
third when he lost an engine on lap 412. Western Sprint veteran Shauna Hogg
became the first lady driver in race history to lead the event, pacing 18 laps
and finishing 10th.
Pole starter Tom Fedewa finished 24th, retiring from the race after 217 laps.
Tony Elliott led 32 laps but tangled with Chris Hayes on lap 255. Elliott hit
the wall and Hayes crashed into a pit barrier, suffering a minor knee injury.
Hayes was taken to St. John's Hospital in Anderson for treatment.
