By Ken de la Bastide
(August 19,
2013) - Paul Phipps continued his
late season charge visiting the Tim Thompson
Nationwide Insurance Winner’s Circle for the
next consecutive week.
Paul Phipps took the
lead from Kamden Creek on the fourth lap and
went on to record his second consecutive
Front Wheel Drive Oval Division feature.
After opening a
comfortable lead Phipps saw it start to
disappear as he battled lapped traffic with
five laps remaining and the caution flag.
Phipps held off Elliott McKinney and Jerry
Dane over the final four laps
to get the victory with Marshall Clark Jr.
and Kevin Henson rounding out the top five.
There was plenty of
jockeying for position among the front
running cars as Dane and McKinney worked
their way to the front of the pack.
For the second consecutive week, Dane was
forced to a back-up car.
A week ago he suffered a
mechanical problem and on Saturday made
heavy contact with the turn one retaining
wall during a practice session.
Creek won the first of
the two heat races taking the lead from
Henson on the eighth circuit with an inside
pass coming off the fourth corner.
Henson lost positions to McKinney and Dane
on the back straight on the final lap.
It was Creek’s second
heat victory of the year. He was chased to
the
checkers by McKinney, Dane, Henson and Mike
Alley.
Brian McKinney recorded
his first win of 2013 by passing Cody Riley
on the fourth lap with an outside pass
entering turn three. Riley had taken the
point from Eric Willey with a similar move
on the second circuit.
It appeared that JD
Blankenship was headed to a second place
finish when his car slowed on the final lap
and limped across the finish line.
Following McKinney to the finish line were
Riley, Jesse Thomas, Harry
Lashure and Willey.
