Caskey Takes Mini Cup Win; Kunert Wears Champion's Crown
By Ken de la Bastide
(October 16, 2012) – Entering the final event of the 2012 season
for the Mini-Cups, Austin Kunert had a one-point lead over Jarret James for
the championship.
When qualifying and the heat races fell victim to Mother Nature last
Saturday at Anderson Speedway it gave Kunert the championship.
With the title out of reach, James took the early lead chased by Kunert with
Jordan Caskey running a close third followed by Brody Hays and Mike Harrold.
Kunert spun in turn three and was sent to the tail of the 13-car field and
Harrold spun on lap three in turn three.
Tony Velez used the inside line entering turn three to pass Hays on lap ten.
As the two leaders approached lapped traffic on lap 13, James elected to
take the high line but found himself trapped behind the slower cars. Caskey
dove to the inside and was able to complete the pass on the front straight.
Caskey went on to win by almost four-tenths of a second over James followed
by Velez, Hays and Kunert, who passed Jayden Cave on lap 23 to claim the
fifth spot.
Jordan Caskey took advantage of lapped traffic to pass Jarret James on lap
13 and went on to win by three-tenths of a second in the Mini-Cups feature.
Both Kunert and James intend to return to Anderson Speedway in 2013
competing in the Legends Division.
