Edwards Inherits Super Modified Victory
By Ken de la Bastide
(October 8, 2012) – Just when it appeared Kyle Edwards was
going to settle for a second place finish, leader Charlie Schultz tangled
with a lapped car with 22 laps remaining.
Schultz dominated the first 78 laps of the Must See Racing Supermodifieds
event and looked like he was leaving Anderson Speedway on Saturday with
$5,000 in his pocket.
Schultz made contact with the lapped car of Don Johnson on the front
straight, getting slightly airborne and rolling to a stop in the infield
with suspension damage.
That gave Edwards, running a distance second at the time the lead and put
Jimmy McCune back on the lead lap for the restart. From there Edwards pulled
away to win by 2.5-seconds over McCune followed by Bandon Fisher, Sondi Eden
and Jon Henes.
At the start of the first 50-laps of the race the early lead was taken by
Danny Shirey, followed by McCune and Schultz with Fisher and Dave McKnight
rounding out the top five.
By taking advantage of the high groove, Schultz blew past McCune on lap two
on the back straight and two circuits later went outside of Shirey on the
front straight to take the point.
Edwards, who set fast time during qualifications, moved into the fourth spot
on lap six with an outside pass of Fisher.
But with Schultz pulling away from the field, the second through sixth place
running cars got trapped behind the lapped car of Zack Gibson following a
restart on lap 20. For the next 25 laps, Gibson held back the faster cars
which allowed Schultz to lap all the way up to the third place car.
Following the break the only cars on the lead lap were Schultz, Shirey and
Edwards. On the restart Shirey spun on the back straight and was relegated
to the tail of the field.
Edwards maintained the lead for two laps when Schultz again used the outside
groove entering turn one to grab the point.
The running order remained the same until Schultz’s night ended following
the contact with Johnson.
Making his first Supermod start ever, McCune won the first heat race leading
the entire distance, chased by McKnight the whole time with Matt Marlowe
coming home in third.
Before a lap was completed Rich Reid spun in turn four and at the same time
Gibson and Marlowe tangled in turn one. Only Gibson and Jim Paller were
unable to continue.
In the second heat race Jack Smith lost traction because of the cold
temperatures and went into turn one below the white line. Smith pushed up
the track which forced Aaron Pierce into the outside retaining wall, ending
Pierce’s night.
Schultz used the high line to pass Shirey in turn one and went on to record
the victory followed by Shirey and Edwards.
Edwards established the Anderson Speedway track record for the
Supermodifieds during qualifying with a lap of 10.873-seconds to edge out
Marlowe with a lap at 10.9-seconds and Schultz with a time of 11.07-seconds.
Shultz turned the fastest lap of the night at 10.823-seconds during the
feature event at a speed of 83.156 miles per hour.
