Bean Wins at Anderson, Young Wears Champions Crown
By Ken de la Bastide
(October 8, 2012) – As it should be the top three drivers in
the Mel Kenyon Midget point standings turned in a dandy feature event with
all three running nose to tail and no one making a mistake.
It took three attempts to get the feature started when first Anthony McCune
and then Amanda Davies spun in turn one on two aborted starts.
But when the green flag was displayed for a third time Jessica Bean jumped
into the lead from the pole position chased by Grant Simpson, Travis Young,
Dameron Taylor and Cordy Horn.
After ten laps Young and Taylor had gotten around Simpson and were running
in lock step with Bean. For 20 laps the three ran in nose to tail with Young
and Taylor waiting for Bean to commit a miscue.
At one point Young made an attempt to get inside of Bean, but decided that
discretion was the better idea and fell back in line. At the checkers it was
Bean winning by two-tenths of a second over Young with Taylor another tenth
of a second back.
By finishing ahead of Taylor, Young captured the season championship by 45
points followed by Taylor, Bean and Horn.
In the first of the two heat races, the caution flag waved on lap two when
Clayton Gaines, making his first start, made contact with the outside
retaining wall and collected the Midget of Young. Gaines night was finished
and Taylor’s chance at the championship took a serious hit as he rejoined
the field on the tail.
Spencer Bayson took the lead from Simpson on the fourth circuit with an
outside pass coming off the fourth corner and Taylor moved into second at
the halfway point with an inside move on Simpson.
At the finish it was Bayson winning by 1.8-seconds over Taylor with Simpson
holding on for third.
Young passed Horn on the two lap of heat two with an outside move entering
turn one and went on to record the victory. Bean passed Horn on the back
straight to finish second with Horn holding off Anthony McCune for third.
