Henson Gets First Career Win
By Ken de la Bastide
(September
10, 2012) –
Kevin Henson inherited the win in the G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive
Figure-8 competition when Elliott McKinney slammed the turn three wall and
went on to record his first ever victory.
McKinney, returning to Anderson Speedway action after a lengthy absence,
took the lead on the first lap chased by Donnie Ellis Jr. and Mark Allman.
Before two laps were completed the car of Jeremy Acree lost a tire in turn
two bringing out the only caution.
On the restart Ellis got inside of McKinney with Henson moving into the
third spot.
Entering the crossover on the front straight on the seventh circuit,
McKinney tapped the back of Ellis’s car. That sent Ellis sliding through the
infield, costing him two positions.
McKinney’s night ended on lap ten when he slammed the outside retaining wall
in turn three and limped back to the infield, out of harm’s way.
That put Henson into the top spot with a rapidly closing Ellis gaining on
every lap. Ellis had a shot at taking the lead coming to turn one on the
next to last lap, but he was blocked by a lapped car.
At the checkers it was Henson winning by 1.1-second over Ellis with Mike
Alley, Allman and James Frawley rounding out the top five.
McKinney recorded his third heat win of the year in the first race, leading
from green to checkers.
Ellis who was running fourth after the first lap passed Alley entering turn
one on lap three and a lap later used the same move to slip inside of
Allman.
At the finish it was McKinney, Ells, Allman, Alley and Henson.
David Powell was dominating the second heat race until he was black-flagged
on lap four for going faster than his qualifying time.
With Powell black-flagged that gave Harry Lashure the lead and he went on to
score his first win of the year. Acree was second followed by Frawley and
Powell.
Alley was the quickest qualifier for the seventh time this year with a time
of 20.433-seconds. Henson was second quick at 20.480-seconds with Ellis
posting the third best time at 20.499-seconds.
