Kirby Dominates EDCO Welding Street Stock Action, Scores Third Feature
Victory
Ken de la Bastide
(August
27, 2012) –
Indianapolis driver Jimmy Kirby swept EDCO Welding Street Stock
action last weekend at Anderson Speedway and took a big step toward the
track championship.
Kirby set fast time during qualifying, won the only heat race for the
division and picked up this third feature win of 2012 and his second in a
row.
Jeff Hopkins took the early lead in the feature race chased by Mike Peters
with Jacob McElfresh running third.
On the second circuit McElfresh and Kirby used the high groove to pass
Peters and set their sights on the leader. Both passed Hopkins on lap three
going down the back straight.
Kirby claimed the lead on lap seven with an inside pass of McElfresh
entering turn one.
The first of two caution flags waved on lap 14 when Andrew Cook and Hopkins
tangled in turn two and the final yellow was displayed on lap 22 when Dennis
Hill spun on the back straight.
Kirby was able to pull away from McElfresh on both restarts to win by
1.7-seconds with Peters coming home third followed by Cook and Hill.
There was plenty of passing in the heat race which eventually saw Kirby
recording the victory.
Peters took the early lead giving away to Cook on lap three entering turn
one. Hopkins moved into the second spot with a pass of Peters going into
turn three.
Kirby and McElfresh both passed Peters on the back straight on the next
circuit with Kirby getting past Hopkins on lap five on the back straight.
The caution flag waved on lap six when Hill spun on the back straight and
Kirby took advantage of the outside line on the restart to take the lead
from Cook and record the victory.
McElfresh finished third with Peters and Hopkins rounding out the top five.
