Charlie Hargraves Takes Outlaw 100

By Ken de la Bastide

(August 13, 2012) –
When it came to the second annual IOFS Outlaw 100 there was little doubt the winner was going to be named Hargraves.

Normally the International Outlaw Figure-8 Series runs on the cross-over track, but for the Outlaw 100 run the high-banked oval at Anderson Speedway.

Because the race was delayed by rain for a week there were several drivers that appeared for the event, starting from the back of the cars that qualified on Aug. 4.

Fast qualifier Brian Rievley was informed on Saturday that IOFS officials declared his tires illegal, despite the fact they were approved the week before. Rievley had the choice of switching tires and starting from the rear of the field, a choice he decided not to make.

Charlie Hargraves grabbed the lead at the start chanced by his brother, Johnny, Shawn Cullen, Jeff Swinford and Preston Maxwell Jr.

When the front running pair reached slower traffic on lap nine, Johnny Hargraves made the right move and slipped inside of Charlie to take the point. Tommy St. John was the driver on the move climbing from sixth to third after 23 laps.

On lap 27 the caution flag waved when Ronnie Phipps spun in turn two. But speedway officials displayed the red flag on lap 30 for oil on the race track, determined to be from St. John’s late model.

Johnny Hargraves remained out front until slowing on lap 51 and stopping on the track on lap 52, bringing out the second caution.

From there Charlies Hargraves had clear sailing for his second Outlaw 100 victory as the remainder of the field was at least two laps down.

Phipps recovered from the spin to move into the second spot on lap 73 and eventually passed Hargraves to put himself one lap down to the leader.

Following Hargraves and Phipps to the checkers were Cullen, Swinford and Jeff Williams.
