Outlaw 100 and CRA Late Model Sportsman Headline Lawrence Night at the Races on Saturday Night

(August 7, 2012) – Racing action returns to Anderson Speedway on Saturday, August 11 with the Lawrence Oil Night at the Races featuring the CRA Late Model Sportsman and Outlaw 100 with the IOFS Oval division. The Thunder Roadsters, G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive Oval division and IOFS Compact Figure 8’s will also be in action on the quarter-mile oval.

The Outlaw 100 is a unique event that is pretty much an open competition event. A weight rule, tire rule, and safety rules are the only restrictions. Fans can be assured of some very wild and creative machines as evidence of last year’s event. A vast majority of the cars will utilize some form of wings.

Open competition Late Model racing is not a new concept in the storied history of Anderson Speedway. This form of racing started in the early 1980's with the Junk Yard 100. This event carried on for a number of years and was highly popular. The event featured pretty much every possible form of short track stock car competing in the same race with the vast majority using wings. The events disappeared from the Anderson Speedway schedule after the 1996 season and didn't return until last year’s inaugural IOFS Outlaw 100.

Drivers who have competed in Anderson Speedway open competition Late Model events comprise an impressive list of short track standouts. Larry Zent, Jim Cooper, Bob Fields, Bobby Blount, CJ Rayburn, Vic Hellis, are just a few of the many who have participated in past events.

The early list of drivers who have indicated they will participate in this year’s Outlaw 100 include Eddie Van Meter, Brian Rievley, Charlie Hargraves, Jeff Swinford, Shawn Cullen, Gary Bedell, Johnny Hargraves, Preston Maxwell and Damon Breedlove just to name a few.

The CRA Late Model Sportsman will make their third trip to Anderson Speedway this season. Jason Atkinson won the season debut in May with Keith Sterkowitz picking his fourth series victory at Anderson on June 2. In the season point standings, Sterkowitz has a seven point lead over K.C. Spillers. The remainder of the top five includes Bob Sibila Jr., Tommy Cook and Brian McFadden.

Many of the regulars in the McGunegill Engine Performance Late Models will be part of the 75-lap feature on Saturday night. Josh Poore sits atop the standings with a 30 point lead over multi-time track champion Brandon Phillips. Third is Ronnie Rose with Fred Hopkins and Rob Allman completing the top five.

In the G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive Oval division, Ron Phipps hold a nice cushion on the competition in the current point standings. Marshall Clark Jr. is ranked in second spot with Trevin Henson and Paul Phipps also putting together impressive seasons to date.

The IOFS Compact Figure 8’s make their fourth appearance of the 2012 season. Winners at Anderson Speedway this year include Nick Warner (April, May) and Keith Morris on Fourth of July. Many of the competitors in the G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive Figure 8’s will be in action on Saturday night. Mike Alley scored his first season victory last weekend and holds a 117 point lead over Donnie Ellis Jr. The Kevin Henson machine rounds out the top three performers.

The Thunder Roadsters will compete on the quarter-mile oval for the sixth time this season. Chris Weddle has collected four feature wins while David Lobbia is the most recent winner on June 30.

On Saturday, August 11, spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with the racing beginning at 7:30. Admission is $12 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12. Children five and under get in free.
