Burge Scores Initial EDCO Welding Street Stock Victory
By Ken de la Bastide
(July
10, 2012) – Coming off a strong second place finish in the
200-lap feature for the EDCO Welding Street Stocks a week ago, Dustin Burge
followed it up with his first win of the season.
But to get that elusive checkered flag, Burge had to hold off fast qualifier
Jimmy Kirby for three double file restarts in the final ten laps.
Burge took the lead from Danny Adams on lap four with a nice inside move
entering turn three.
Kirby, who started sixth in the field, was running third when the first
caution flag waved on lap ten when Adams and Dennis Hill spun in turn four.
On lap 12 Kirby slipped underneath second place running Ricky Tharp in turn
three and set his sights on Burge.
The caution flag waved on lap 24 when Andrew Cook spun in turn two and on
the restart Kirby was able to run neck and neck with Burge, but was unable
to make the pass.
The caution flag waved again on lap 27 when Jacob McElfresh and point leader
Josh Myers tangled in turn three while battling for the fourth spot. The
final caution came on lap 29 when Adams spun in turn two.
Burge got the jump on the restart to win by less than three-tenths of a
second over Kirby followed by Tharp, Myers and Adams.
“We’ve been working on getting things together,” Burge said of his
back-to-back strong finishes. “I didn’t want to see those late caution
flags.”It was Burge’s first win in the division since 2009.
Myers won the first of the two heat races with an inside pass of Tyler Marsh
at the halfway point coming off the fourth corner. Prior to that Myers and
Burge traded paint on the first lap, causing Burge to suffer a left flat
rear tire.
Kirby got inside of Marsh coming off the fourth corner to claim the second
spot and Tharp made a similar move entering turn three to come home in
third.
McElfresh won the second heat race, but had to turn back a strong challenge
from Frankie Oakes.
Oakes passed Adams on the second lap to move into the runner-up spot and
following a restart on lap five was able to gain a slight advantage on the
outside coming down the front straight.
McElfresh took command on the next circuit by using the low groove through
turn three. Adams finished third.
