Rod Phipps Moving to IOFS, Chasing Wins at Anderson
(March
24, 2011) –
Veteran racer Rod Phipps will have change of scenery
this season as he will compete full-time in the International Outlaw Figure
8 Series (IOFS).
“I’m really looking forward to racing with the IOFS this season,” said Rod
Phipps. “My goal is to run in the top five on any given night. That will be
a tough challenge but I’m excited about this new opportunity. I want to earn
the respect from everybody in the series.”
Phipps will begin his IOFS season at Anderson on April 30 that marks the
first of five races at the quarter-mile oval. Anderson will be a regular
fixture on the IOFS tour as half of the 10 race schedule will take place at
the challenging Figure 8 track.
Phipps has won Anderson Speedway championships in Figure 8’s (2007, 2010),
Street Stocks (2006), WMDH ThunderCars (2009, 2010) and ThunderCar Pro
(2006).
In addition to a full season with IOFS, Phipps plans to race at Anderson in
the Figure 8 and WMDH ThunderCar divisions on a part-time basis. One of
track’s marquee events, the 62nd National Crown, for the Figure 8 division
will continue to be a focus for Phipps as he will be chasing his fourth
victory. He has experienced success in America’s longest continuous stock
car event with earning three victories with the most recent taking place in
2009.
“I’m excited about racing to win at Anderson Speedway this year and not
worrying about points.”
Last season Phipps accomplished a remarkable achievement winning the Figure
8 and WMDH ThunderCar championships. Phipps drove to the Figure 8 title with
car owner Brenda Allman and the ThunderCar crown with Rodney Milliner
“It was unbelievable winning two championships in one year especially with
one on the Figure 8 and the other on the Oval. It would never been possible
without the help from a great crew.”
Phipps recorded an impressive 12-top five finishes in the Figure 8 division
in 2010 while reaching the Winner’s Circle on four occasions. In the final
points rundown he finished 85 markers ahead of Curtis Chapman.
Consistency was also a theme of Phipps’ title run in the WMDH ThunderCars.
In the opening eight nights, he was among the top three finishers. At the
conclusion of the season Phipps tallied three feature wins, 11 top-five
finishes and seven heat victories.
Sponsors that are helping Rod Phipps in 2011 include Progressive Masonry,
Sheets Automotive, Milliner Towing, Great Deals Coupon Magazine and Shorts
Machine Shop. Rod sends a special appreciation to Brenda Allman and Rodney
Milliner for the opportunity to race for them in 2011. Special thanks also
to Doug Sheets.
Rod Phipps was expected to begin his 2011 season on Saturday in the
ThunderCar Enduro. That event has been postponed due to cold weather
conditions and rain chances. The event has been reset for April 29. He has earned two Enduro victories including the most recent version
last October.
