Four Figure 8 Legends Return
The series finale for the International Outlaw Figure 8 Series (IOFS) Saturday
night October 2 will be highlighted by the return of four Figure 8 legends to
Anderson Speedway.
Saturday night's U.S. Air Force Night Of Thrills will feature the IOFS Outlaw
and Front Wheel Drive divisions along with School Bus Figure 8's, Culver's
Trailer race, and a backwards race. The WMDH 102.5 Night At The Races will
welcome back Figure 8 legends: Bob Fields, Johny Keller, and Joe Beaver, and
Gene Huston.
Bob Fields was a former Anderson Speedway track owner who competed at Anderson
Speedway for several decades. He competed in the Late Model and Figure 8
divisions. He was a multi-time track champion at Anderson Speedway. The Willow
Branch driver was also a three-time National Crown Figure 8 champion. Fields
also won one Red, White, and Blue Figure 8 series win here at Anderson Speedway
during his career.
Anderson resident, Johny Keller was the 1979 Anderson Speedway Figure 8 points
champion. Keller had a career year in 1979 as he won an incredible 11 out of 16
feature events. Keller also competed in the World Figure 8 Championship in
Islip, NY in the late 1960's with a top ten finish. At the time, the Islip event
was considered the premier Figure 8 event in the entire country. Keller is the
father of 2008 Anderson Speedway Front Wheel Drive champion Andy Keller.
Noblesville driver, Joe Beaver, is still active in the CRA Street Stock and
Sportsman divisions. But, his days as a Figure 8 driver are long behind him.
During his time behind the wheel of Figure 8 events he was a force to be
reckoned with. Beaver was the 1987 and 1991 Anderson Speedway Figure 8 track
champion. He was also a two-time winner of the National Crown with back-to-back
wins in 1994 and 1995. He also has one Open Comp Figure 8 win to his credit at
Anderson Speedway. Beaver ventured south in 1992 to compete in the North/South
Figure 8 Challenge during Speedweeks. It was an Outlaw Figure 8 series with
Northern guys competing against Florida Figure 8 drivers. Beaver claimed this
championship and proved that he could compete with the best the sport had offer.
Anderson's Gene Huston is arguably won of the best Figure 8 drivers to compete
at Anderson Speedway. Huston is a 6-time National Crown champion. No man has won
this prestigious race more than Huston. Huston is also a 4-time Anderson
Speedway Figure 8 champion with titles in '77,'78,'84, and '99. Huston also has
4 career Outlaw Figure 8 victories here at Anderson Speedway.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early as there will be a pre-race meet and great
with these Figure 8 legends. Fans will be able to get an autograph and share
memories about each of their illustrious careers. A special souvenir program
will be available for purchase with pictures and bios on each of these legends.
This event will mark the final IOFS Outlaw event of 2010. The 2010 champion will
be crowned at the conclusion of the 50 lap event. Currently, Gary Bedell has a
97 point lead over second place Charlie Hargraves. The IOFS Front Wheel Drive
division will also be in competition as they will be competing in their next-to
last event of the year.
