Robbins Wins Duel with Nuckles
Two
of the best drivers competing at Anderson
Speedway in the Legends car put on a classic battle last Saturday with Elwood's
John Robbins visiting the winner's circle.
Ohio driver Bryan Nuckles was looking for his third consecutive win at Anderson,
but from the start Robbins let it be known he was going to be a force to be
reckoned with before the night was done.
Robbins set fast time during qualifications followed by .13 seconds by Nuckles,
so the stage was set for a battle.
During the feature James Edsall III grabbed the lead chased by Aaron Holden,
Nuckles, Doug Dugger and Robbins.
On the sixth circuit both Nuckles and Robbins passed Holden to move up to the
second and third positions.
Nuckles passed Edsall on lap 11 with an inside pass on the front straight and a
lap later Robbins moved into the second spot entering turn three.
The battle between Nuckles and Robbins raged for seven laps with the two
swapping the lead. Finally on lap 19 Nuckles drifted high in turn four which
allowed Robbins to claim the top spot.
From there Robbins went on to win by .6 seconds over Nuckles followed by Edsall,
Holden and Joey Greening.
"It was a fun race," Robbins said. "We always race hard together," he said of
battling with Nuckles.
In the first heat race Robbins jumped into the lead at the start with Nuckles
and Holden rounding out the top three. Andrew Hans and Greening got together on
the last lap with Hans coming to rest against the outside retaining wall.
The second heat started with a bang when leader Marty Griffin spun coming off
the fourth corner. The car of John Greer made hard contact with the outside
retaining wall and the cars of Jimmy Fritz and Tony Holden being collected.
Kevin Donahue passed Chris Linley on the ninth lap with a nifty move entering
turn one to record the victory. Donahue finished second followed by Angela
Donahue.
