Allman Takes ThunderCar Feature; Phipps, Cullen Heats Winners
The Spring Championships proved to be an exceptional night
for Anderson veteran Rob Allman.
After winning the Street Stock feature, Allman strapped
into an WMDH Thunder Car and backed up his quick time during qualifications to
lead the entire distance for the victory.
Allman jumped into the lead and was closely chased by Rob Wyman Sr. for the
first few laps, but gradually started to pull away. The field was bunched back
up on lap nine because of fluid on the track.
On the restart Allman again started stretching his lead while Wyman was
challenged for the second spot by Ronnie Rose, Rod Phipps and Shawn Cullen. The
four drivers raced in close contact with each other.
Rose got inside of Wyman on lap 13 with an inside pass coming off the fourth
corner and two laps later Wyman dove to the inside entering turn three to regain
the position as Rose slowed.
At the checkers Allman won by 6.391 seconds followed by Wyman, Phipps, Cullen
and Nick Warner.
“The car was really good tonight,” he said. “Nothing better than this,” Allman
said of the two feature wins.
Jeff Saxon took the early lead in the first heat and maintained the point until
lap eight when Phipps was able to get inside entering turn three. On the final
lap Saxon was passed by both Warner and Allman using the high groove through
turn four.
In the second heat race, Earl Adams II took a short lived lead at the start with
Cullen moving to the outside going down the front straight to take the lead.
Adams was passed on the third circuit by Wyman on the outside along the front
straight and by Rose on the back stretch.
For Cullen it was his second consecutive heat win.
