Spring Championships Featured on Saturday

Speedway returns to racing action this weekend with Spring Championships taking
place on Saturday, May 22. Featured divisions include Figure 8’s, Street Stocks,
WMDH ThunderCars, Front Wheel Drives in Oval and Figure 8 action along with the
brand new Pure Stock division.
Former three-time division champion Rich Boyer and points runner-up Rob Allman
are tied in the Street Stock point standings entering the action this weekend
that will award double points. Both drivers have earned a feature victory with
Boyer also claiming the CRA Street Stock victory a few weeks back. Other early
season challengers include Muncie’s Derrick Layne, veteran Randy Hoppes and
Larry Greene Jr.
Rod Phipps continues his strong start in the Figure 8 division in search of
another championship at Anderson Speedway. He leads former division titlist
Curtis Chapman by 30 points with two-time champion Jeff Swinford ranking third.
Dale Phillips and Bruce McFall round out the top five.
Only two points events into the ThunderCar season, Shawn Cullen has performed at
a high level to sit atop the standings. He won the opening event in April and
added his second consecutive top five finish last weekend. Other competitors in
the hunt include Rod Phipps, Nick Warner and Rob Wyman Sr., who scored his first
victory after retiring from racing for 12 years.
Chris Teepe paces the Front Wheel Drive Oval standings with a 23 point advantage
over Gary Bragg Sr. Third is Gary Bragg Jr. with Kevin Harmon and Frank Gasho
filling out the top five. Harmon leads the division with two feature victories.
Four victories in the initial five events have propelled Rickie Tharp into the
first position in the Front Wheel Drive Figure 8 standings, but Nick Warner and
Josh Tharp remain close behind heading into the Spring Championship. Rickie
Tharp and Warner have scored top-five finishes in each of the features so far in
2010.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. on Saturday with racing beginning at 8. Admission
is $10 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12. Children five and under get in
free.
