Pitts Wins Exciting Figure 8 Feature
Jason
Pitts led all 25 laps to win the Figure-8 feature but it wasn’t a drive in the
park as five drivers battled for the top spot for most of the race.
For the first half of the event Pitts was pressed by Dale Phillips, Rod Phipps,
Ronnie Rose and Curtis Chapman. With Pitts on the point the other four driver
raced side-by-side jockeying for position.
Rose, last week’s feature win, made a charge to the second position with inside
passes of Rod Phipps and Phillips by lap seven.
Rose suddenly slowed on lap 13 and four laps later Phipps spun in the turn one
grass. Both drivers recovered to remain in the hunt for the victory.
Curtis Chapman turned up the heat on Jason Pitts for the final five laps with
Rod Phipps and Rose climbing into the top five followed by Ronnie Phipps.
Rod Phipps passed Chapman with three laps remaining but was unable to complete
the pass of Pitts at the checkers. Chapman, Rose and Ronnie Phipps rounded out
the top five.
It was Jason Pitts first feature win of the season.
The only caution flag waved on lap two when Jeff Swinford and Shawn Cullen spun
together in the crossover, ending both drivers night.
“It was wild out there,” Pitts said. “I didn’t have the fastest car, but I got
the win. They were beating on my bumper the whole race. So I ran the middle
groove, I just wanted to keep them behind me.”
In the first heat race Rose led the entire distance and was chased by Cullen
with Phillips claiming the third spot after making an inside pass of Chapman on
the home stretch of the Figure-8 course. Chapman finished fourth followed by
Bruce McFall.
Rod Phipps won the second heat race with Swinford gaining the second spot with
an inside pass of James Peterson and Pitts claimed the third position after
getting underneath Peterson entering turn one. Peterson came home fourth
followed by Ronnie Phipps.
