USAC National Sprint Cars Return on Saturday Night for 10th Glen Niebel
Classic
The month of May will begin at Anderson Speedway with the only season appearance
from the USAC National Sprint Cars on Saturday Night, May 2. Also in action, the
Front Wheel Drives will be featured on the Oval and Figure 8.
The USAC National Sprint Car Series will be showcased in the 10th Annual Glen
Niebel Classic, a 100-lap event around the world’s fastest quarter-mile oval. In
the previous nine Glen Niebel Classic events, nine different winners have drove
into the winner’s circle. Former event winners that are expected to compete this
weekend include inaugural race winner Eric Gordon, 2002 victor Tracy Hines, 2003
winner Aaron Pierce, Dave Darland, the 2006 winner and Levi Jones, who drove the
Tony Stewart Racing entry to the 2007 race victory.
The Glen Niebel Classic marks the seventh event of the USAC National Sprint Car
season. In the opening six events, six drivers have earned checkered flags with
Darren Hagen scoring the opener at Manzanita (AZ) Speedway. Other early season
winners include Cole Whitt at Las Vegas (NV) Motor Speedway and Rickie Gaunt at
Perris (CA) Auto Speedway.
In April, USAC returned to the Midwest with Jerry Coons Jr. taking the victory
at Eldora (OH) Speedway, Dave Darland winning a thrilling race at Gas City I-69
(IN) Speedway and Josh Wise is the most recent driver to claim a victory with
his triumph at Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway on April 19.
Seeking his fifth USAC Championship and second in the Sprint Car division, Dave
Darland sits atop the point standings with a 37 point cushion over Jesse Hockett.
Third is Levi Jones with Kasey Kahne Racing driver Brad Sweet ranked in fourth
spot and Jerry Coons Jr. rounding out the top five.
On Saturday Night, spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with the first racing taking
the green flat at 8. Admission is $15 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12.
Children five and under get in free.
