Zimmerly, Burge,
Ellis and Harmon Score Friday Night Wins
Zack Zimmerly captured the Newco Metals Legend feature in the WLBC/MAX Friday
Night Summer Series at Anderson Speedway while Travis Burge continued his
winning ways in the Thundercar main event. Point leader Kevin Harmon scored the
Quick Auto Front Wheel Drive Amateur win and Donnie Ellis, Jr survived the wild
figure 8.
Zack Zimmerly made quick work of the competition in the Newco Metals legend
feature, sailing to a large lead early and never looking back. The 14 year old
from Davidson, N.C. scored his second win of the season defeating Billy Smith,
defending track champion John Robbins, Bryan Nuckles and Mark Dietzen to round
out the top five. Zimmerly was also the heat winner with Robbins fast timer at
13.946 seconds.
In Thundercar action, Travis Burge has been a domineering force in 2008. His
persistence paid dividends again as Travis worked his way through traffic to
take the lead late in the race and go on to his sixth feature win of the year.
Chasers were Tom Tackett, Dennis Farver, Sr; Hannah Lundy and Sam Folsom
rounding out the top five. Jerry Mandrell was the prelim winner and Lonnie
Burton was fast qualifier at 15.216 seconds.
Point leader Kevin Harmon jumped on the competition early in the Quick Auto
Front Wheel Drive Amateur headliner and sailed to his second win in three weeks.
Finishing out the top five were Ron Phipps, Andy Keller, Mike Alley and Jared
Keller. Harmon also took the heat win with Jeff Saxon fast timer at 16.118
seconds.
The Quick Auto Front Wheel Drive Figure 8 was a dandy! Newcomer Justin Brown led
the first four laps before Ricky Tharp took control. Donnie Ellis, Jr and Nick
Warner joined Tharp the last five laps for an awesome battle for the lead. With
both Tharp and Ellis slamming each other, Warner laid back a little. Coming
through the intersection for the checker, Tharp and Ellis came together one
final time with both cars spinning wildly toward the finish line and Warner
charging the line. When the smoke had cleared, Donnie Ellis, Jr had slid across
the line in first, Ricky Tharp sliding across in second, Nick Warner finishing
third followed by Tony Torres and Dennis Farver, Sr.
