Raber, Acrey,
Robbins and Hoppes Light Up Anderson
It was Ed Martin Chevrolet Night at the Races Saturday evening as Ben Raber took
the USA Modified main in his first appearance at Anderson Speedway. Danny Acrey,
II grabbed his first win of the year in the Street Stock headliner while John
Robbins continued his winning ways in the Newco Metals Legends feature and Randy
Hoppes lit 'em up taking both checkers in the Quick Auto Front Wheel Drive Pros.
The O’Reilly USA Modified Tour got off to a rough start with a complete restart
and a yellow in the first lap. Ben Raber led the event from the get go. John
Manula and Scott Coe tangled on lap 17 for the first yellow. Cory Setser was
pressuring Raber for the lead when they hooked bumpers on lap 35 allowing Jeff
Weston to pass them both. Modified race control called a safety yellow to unhook
the bumpers and allowed the front runners to maintain the first two positions,
with Weston going back to third on the restart. Raber went on to the win
defeating Setser, Weston, Tim Burkett and Kyle Jones. Burkett was the dash
winner with Setser copping the heat win. Weston was fast timer at 12.788
seconds.
In Street Stock action, Danny Acrey, II took his first checker of the season.
Acrey was flying on the outside and made the race winning pass on early leader
Steve Blair on lap 19. The race was slowed by 2 two car incidents the last of
which sent Jake McElfresh flying high through the air after tangling with Josh
Burton down the main shute. Trailing Acrey at the checker were Rich Boyer, Joe
Beaver, Jake Owens and Blair rounding out the top five. Burton and Ronnie Rose
were heat winners with Owens fast qualifier at 14.093 seconds.
Defending track champion John Robbins took his second straight Newco Metals
Legends feature win with a last lap pass of Adam Roberts. Mickie Kudlicki,
Robbins and Roberts put on quite a driving performance with the three battling
for the lead the distance. Roberts and Robbins got around Kudlicki and then
Robbins pulled off the same move he did in the heat to capture the main event.
Chasing Robbins were Roberts, Kudlicki, James Edsall, III and Mark Dietzen
rounding out the top five. Robbins and Chris Weddle were prelim winners with
Roberts fast timer at 14.173 seconds.
It was double feature time for the Quick Auto Front Wheel Drive Pros and Randy
Hoppes proved to be the man to beat as he captured both the make-up feature and
the scheduled headliner. In the make-up event Donnie Ellis, Jr was runner-up
followed by Jerry Baker, Peter Corsaro and Tim Harrod. Ellis was the chief
chaser in the second feature with Gary Bragg, Jr; Jack Leisure and Jerry Baker
rounding out the top five. Ellis and Robert Kelm were heat winners with Gary
Bragg, Sr fast timer at 16.084 seconds.
