East Wins USAC National Midget Feature; Armstrong Scores Kenyon Victory

Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. recorded his 28th USAC National feature victory Sunday afternoon, winning the 50-lap Mopar National Midget race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. The win was his 14th in the National Midget series.

East trailed Brad Kuhn for the first 23 laps, then made a daring pass on the outside of turn two to take the lead in his Ford Racing Beast/Esslinger Ford. He led the final seven laps to beat Kody Swanson, Tracy Hines, Kuhn and Mike Murgoitio.

Defending National Champion Jerry Coons Jr. had to take a provisional starting spot, then finished 15th, while former series point leader Darren Hagen crashed during a heat race and was unable to make the main event.

Hines’ finish put him in the series point lead going into next Saturday’s race at Southern National Raceway in Kenly, N.C.

Caleb Armstrong of New Castle, Ind. emerged the winner of Sunday's 30-lap USAC Kenyon Midget Series season opener at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. He thought he had finished second, but after Tyler Cottongim's car failed to pass post-race technical inspection, Caleb was elevated to first position.

Cottongim had led all 30 laps before the disqualification.

Armstrong ended up officially leading the final 29 laps in his Bungee North America/Anderson Grain Kenyon/Yamaha to beat Jiff Wimmenauer, Grant Galloway, Mike Terry and Taylor Ferns.

Dalton Armstrong and Wimmenauer won heats and Dillon Welch was the fastest qualifier at 12.574 seconds.

The series resumes May 14 at Anderson.

Anderson Speedway returns to action on Saturday, April 12 with the Ivy Tech Night at the Races featuring the return of the CRA Super Series Late Models in the Great Deals 125. The racing program will also feature ImmediaDent Figure 8’s, Street Stocks and Quick Auto Front Wheel Drives Pro.
