Anderson Speedway returned to racing action on Saturday, July 28th with the
ThunderCar Enduro 200. Some 57 cars were on hand for the biggest race of the
year for the ThunderCar division. Also on the program were the Lampco Federal
Credit Union Street Stocks and Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure
8’s.
The 200 lap ThunderCar Enduro began with defending race winner Rod Phipps taking
command of the field. On the second lap the race was stopped after an accident
between Herb Rose and Carl Muffley. On the restart Eric Evans charged around
Phipps to become the new race leader. Evans then dominated the remainder of the
first half of the event. At the half way break Evans was scored as the race
leader with Phipps in second and Ken Scheffler in third. Only the top three cars
remained on the lead lap. Randy Hoppes and Tom Gossar completed the top five.
After a ten minute break Evans turned in a near perfect performance in the
second half, earning a sizeable victory over Sheffler. Phipps finished third,
one lap off the winning pace. Gossar and Mike Riddle Jr. completed the top five.
Sam Folsom earned top honors in qualifying with a time of 15.038 seconds.
In other racing action, Anderson’s Jake Owens scored another victory in the
Lampco Federal Credit Union Street Stocks. Former Street Stock champion John
Lundy led the initial six circuits with Owens sailing into first place on lap
seven. Abe Puckett pressured Owens throughout the remaining circuits but was
forced to settle for runner up honors. Finishing third was Willy DeHart with
Ronnie Phipps and Randy Hoppes filling out the top five finishers.
In heat race action Owens and Hoppes scored victories. Danny Acrey II was the
top qualifier at 14.369 seconds.
Jeff Wright completed the weekend sweep with winning his second consecutive
Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure 8. He got the jump on Donnie Ellis
Jr. and never looked back. Ellis finished a distant second with David Baker in
third. Dennis Farver Sr. and Cale Ramey rounded out the top five.
