Anderson Speedway returned to action
on May 11, with the WLBC/MAX Friday Night Summer Series featuring Newco Metals
Legends, ThunderCars along with Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drives in Oval
and Figure 8 racing.
Anderson’s Nick Warner made a late-race challenge to keep his perfect record
alive in the Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure 8’s, scoring his
third consecutive victory. The 10-lap event began with Jeff Wright darting into
the first position and then on the second circuit, Wright went spinning after
contact from Dennis Farver Sr.
That advanced Travis Burge into the top spot and he dominated a large portion of
the event. As Burge was leading, Warner advanced from his mid-pack starting
position in the 15 car field. On lap five, Warner moved into second position and
on the final circuit, exiting turn 4 on the Figure 8, Warner dove underneath
Burge and beat him to the finish line by just inches. Keith Morris placed third
with Donnie Ellis Jr. and Dennis Farver Sr. rounding out the top five.
The Newco Metals Legends competed in their first point’s event of the season in
an action-packed 25-lap event. Former division champion Eric Black grabbed the
lead at the start, pacing the opening nine laps. ON the 10th circuit,
Tennessee’s David Moyes lll drove around the outside of Black to claim first
place. Two laps later, Robbins moved into second around Black.
The remainder of the event, Robbins tried to make a move on Moyes for the lead,
but was forced to settle for second-place honors. Defending champion Rodney
Smith placed third with Black and Billy Smith filling out the top five.
In preliminary action, Tony Holden and Black collected heat race victories.
Rodney Smith posted the top qualifying time with a lap of 14.056 seconds.
Rookie Sam Folsom recorded his first ThunderCar victory. The feature began with
Darryl Rogers up front on the first circuit with Tom Tacket pacing lap two and
Folsom then charging underneath Tacket to lead the third lap. Once Folsom was up
front, he led the remainder of the 20-lap event. Brad Stevens finished in second
with Lonny Burton, Alice Riall and Nick Warner completing the top five.
Anderson’s Tim Nickerson earned the heat race victory with Brad Stevens turning
the best qualifying lap with an official clocking of 15.288 seconds.
The final event of the evening was the Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive
Oval feature. Kevin Harmon made an exciting last lap pass on Devin Mitchell to
score his third consecutive victory. The race began with Brian Lewis up front,
then Hannah Lundy paced laps two through four with Alan Wagner leading from laps
four through six. Mitchell passed Wagner on the seventh go-around and held the
lead until Harmon made his race-winning pass. Wagner was third with Donnie Ellis
lll and Lee Gossett completing the top five.
In heat race action, Casey Davis and Lewis earned the winning hardware. Harmon
posted the best qualifying time with an official lap of 15.963 seconds.
On Saturday, May 12, the Ed Martin Auto Group SuperTrucks, Lampco Federal Credit
