With the increased number of entries in 2018, The Tin Plate Fine Food & Spirits Pole Day was extremely exhilarating. 41 drivers took a time on pole day. The story of the day was the pole winner – Davey Hamilton Jr. He didn’t even practice that morning because of Indy Lights qualifying at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His father, Davey Hamilton, warmed up the car for him on the morning of pole day. Hamilton Jr. flew in by helicopter half way through qualifying and on his first attempt put together four laps that would send him to the top of the charts. His plan was to just go out and shake down the car. After he saw his first lap time, he kept the hammer down and finished the run. Track record holder Aaron Pierce qualified in the second position.

Qualifying for the Pay Less Little 500 presented by UAW-GM is conducted over two days. The Tin Plate Fine Food & Spirits Pole Day is on Thursday and Friday is Bump Day. The Top 15 qualifiers are locked into the field on pole day and cannot be bumped from the field. In 2018, the top 15 were separated by just two tenths of a second. In the past few years, Bump Day has become one of the most intense days of Little 500 week.
